Watching Puteri Gunung Ledang @ Istana Budaya, KL...(The English Variant)
Monday, February 23, 2009

I had actually finished work earlier on that Thursday night, and managed to drive down to KL before the appointed hour. Upon reaching Istana Budaya at 8.15p.m., I was surprised to see my compatriots decked out in 'baju kurungs'. Miss Yenli, Li Ping and Lynn looked utterly different, and rather cute at that (as they proudly proclaimed), when sporting their baju kurung (all on loan from Miss Li Ping). I had never felt as cultured as I did on that night.

Istana Budaya at dusk/night.

Antique grand door.

Glamourous attendees.

Macro shot of floating flowers.

'Puteri Gunung Ledang' merchandise. Look, there's a T-shirt.

Beautiful girls in 'baju kurung'.

Mr. Cheah with his bini-bini, Miss Li Ping, Miss Yenli, and Miss Lynn (who would rather die than really be real binis)

Before long, the show started, and we rushed into the auditorium to look for our seats. After several noisy moments (I distinctly remember someone loudly shouting "Barbie! Barbie!" followed by peals of laughter) we eventually settled down to sing 'Negaraku'. Actually, it wasn't really necessary to sing it, but Miss Lynn, with great gusto, immediately began belting out the first line of the song, until she realized no one else was singing.

We are engrossed with our own camera.

Miss Li Ping suffers from severe cold.

Miss Siti stands bolt upright when listening to 'Negaraku'.

Having sang the national anthem, the show began. The auditorium went pitch black, and the audience settled in to enjoy the performance. My camera was already ready to snap photos, but after several attempts to capture a proper shot of the stage, I noticed a red dot of light dancing on my forehead. Apparently, thats how the ushers prohibited the audience from taking pictures.

The start of the show.

Raja Majapahit.

Can see a bit of Puteri Gunung Ledang.

Puteri Gunung Ledang is chock full of romance, with a shot of mystery and humour. The title character (acted by Tiara Jacquelina) and Admiral Hang Tuah (played by a handsome guy with a voice that would make anyone melt) managed to enact a forceful and emotional play. The only unsatisfactory part of the play was the low standard of the props, further emphasized when Miss Lynn noticed one of the stage crew almost get flattened by the moving mountain. I had never heard the word 'Malacca' shouted with such passion prior to this.

3's Company (Seafield)

3's Company with Minister False Beard.

There's Tiara Jacquelina and Mbok.

Miss Li Ping.

Miss Lynn.

Miss Yenli, and antique door.

Miss Lynn enjoys furry paintings.

An enjoyable night indeed. Good friends (looking cute in 'baju kurung') and a performance of culture and drama. What else can one wish for?

Istana Budaya at 11.30p.m.

I can't wait for the next play.
