Zouk KL Turns 5! ... (A Week Overdue Review)
Friday, April 03, 2009
Its been a week since Zouk turned the grand old age of 5, and my ears are still ringing from the delightfully loud, pounding music in Phuture.
The queue was already starting to form, when I arrived at the low gates of Zouk. Beyond, I could see that the party was underway, with all kinds of costumed characters walking around, getting ready to bedazzle the eager crowd. Once the gates opened, we shuffled along the line, a small group among the many who had been invited to be part of an auspicious occasion - Zouk's 5th year in the lifestyle scene.
The good 'ol Zouk signage. Fantasia! (along Jalan Ampang) Stick Man Who Dances Like A Pro. It the Clown, and His Freaky Looking Friend. Mushrooms? The photographers among us started to wander off, snapping away at the various oddities that walked around the compound. Never failing to be bloggers, we also took the compulsory photos of ourselves.
Kel Li and I (again, same bottle in hand). Myself (beer bottle disposed of), Simon, Fahzrul, Aaron, David, Stanley, Hsu Jen, and Kel Li. Stephanie and Chung Lern. Promptly after the warm-up session outside, the gates to Zouk finally opened, and we trooped into the Zouk mainroom, where LAPSAP took the reins, and pumped wild music onto floor, enticing the crowd to start tapping their feet.
Zouk Main Room, from high vantage point. Yatz gets his groove on. The Man Who Is Everywhere gets his fur scarf on. Fahzrul dislikes bright lights. Turning 5 isn't something you'd do all the time, so, the special occasion called for a special eye-opener, which came in the form of a huge bottle of champagne, enclosed within a golden cage topped with sparklers.
Talk about grand. The staff and management of Zouk KL... ...drink a toast to the continued success of the club. Of course, after the more sober and ceremonial stuff, the party really got under way. If had thought that music was loud earlier, apparently, the dial was still at the 'low' setting. Seeing the crowd's enthusiasm, the DJ's increased the tempo, and soon, everyone was busy gyrating to the infectious beat.
Kel Li, Hsu Jen, Katherine, and a retarded looking Me (I picked up the beer bottle that I disposed of earlier) Happy ladies. Lady in Red. Kel Li and Khai Ling (?) Wrestling competition on the dance floor. DJ Point Blanc, and lovely female companion. Chung Lern, Stephanie, and Kel Li! Pyjamas comes back in fashion! (I suspect she also stepped on his foot) Spotted taking a picture of Saint Simon. Spotted camwhoring with new-found sister, (Cheah) Hsu Jen. A proper photo of new-found sister. The event would never be complete without an excessive round of self-portraits;
We decided to explore the huge maze that was Zouk, and ended up in Velvet, where the good 'ol oldies, from the era where big hair was cool and flourescent jackets were the thing to have, drifted from powerful speakers.
Yep. Mambo. Again, The Man Who Is Everywhere appears, together with The Matrix Escapee. Boy, the dancers could really move. Seriously, they were extremely talented. Taken the fact that they were dancing on the counter-top adds to the overall appeal. The last stop was Phuture, the place where I officially lost my hearing (I was standing right next to the gargantuan speakers), with R&B and Hip Hop ending the night in a blaze of raised hands and stomping feet.
Serene! (recently met on the dance floor) The DJ's going all out to end the night in style. I finally staggered out, tired, but extremely amazed at the amount of effort put into ushering in a new age for Zouk KL. With the free flow of drinks, elaborate settings, crazy-assed characters wandering about, hot dancers gyrating to equally sizzling music, and a room full of people itching to get footloose, the night seemed reluctant to end.
Congratulations to Zouk, for 5 years worth of partying, and here's to many, many more years to come!
I wonder when's the next time I get to take a photo with Marge Simpson (turned seductive and slightly greenish).
Only time will tell.
Many thanks to;Kel Li, for the invite, and David, Nigel, Christopher, and Aaron for the wonderful photos!
